Harts of Teal, a faith-based non-profit started by two ovarian cancer survivors.

Judy was the oldest of 7, a RN nurse, mom of 2 and happily married for over 20 years. In her 40s the found out about her ovarian cancer diagnosis and unfortunately she passed away at 49 from this terrible disease. Her sister Janine DeFeo could not understand the lack of information regarding Ovarian Cancer and why she was not properly diagnosed until she was in the late stage of this disease. This is the case of many many women and that is why we want to make an effort for change. So Janine and some other women banned together and started a non-profit called Teal Butterfly in 2010 in Charlotte, NC.

Prior to Judy passing away, they took a girl’s trip to Blowing Rock, NC. Her mom, daughter, and sisters purchased butterfly necklaces at a boutique called IAGO on Main Street. Each was a different color and we complimented one another as we all put them on. We asked the sales lady to take a picture and just before she did Judy with her contagious laugh joked and said “make a butterfly symbol with your hands.”

You can also join in the awareness of Ovarian Cancer by taking the #tealbutterflychallenge. Follow the directions on the photo and post it here! Getting the community involved is the best way to spread awareness!

Unfortunately there is currently no accurate screening for Ovarian Cancer so it is so important to know the symptoms: Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer may include: Bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain, feeling full quickly, urgency to use the bathroom or changes in bathroom habits and fatigue. If symptoms persist for more than a few weeks, please see you OB/GYN. Ask questions about your body and ask questions about the CA125 blood test. We want you here and we want you healthy. Thank you for all you do Janine DeFeo.
