Life was good in 2022, retired, busy Master Gardener, church volunteer and most importantly, grandma to 3 boys. Then, I noticed changes in bowel habits…I could not go! After trying all the usual things to get back to my daily BM, I saw my primary healthcare provider who ordered an abdominal X-RAYS that ruled out a blockage, prescribed a laxative and said come back if no better in 7days. After 5 days of no relief, I called back, and she ordered an abdominal CAT scan. That same afternoon, she called to tell me the scan showed peritoneal carcinomatosis, most likely Ovarian Cancer. She cried, I cried, and she started working on an oncology referral. Meanwhile, I called my Nurse Practitioner friend who worked in the oncology practice in the town I live in. She told me to come to the office the next morning to be seen. The next 2 weeks were a blur of learning about this aggressive cancer, a paracentesis to drain 4 liters of fluid from my abdomen, having a port placed and beginning chemotherapy. In collaboration with the Gyn oncologist, my treatment plan was to be 3 chemo infusions, hysterectomy, more chemo infusions. I showed a good response to the chemo, had the hysterectomy robotically and recovered well. I was prescribed several maintenance drugs, could not tolerate them…platelets dropped, PRES syndrome, felt really bad. After the quality of lie vs quantity of days talk, my oncologist and I decided quality was most important. As I had been doing since the diagnosis, I asked for prayer and certainly know that God is keeping me in the palms of his healing hands as I navigate this journey. For the past 18 months, bloodwork and scans have shown No Evidence of Disease-NED. Joining our local cancer support group has certainly helped, it’s a blessing to hear others’ stories and know that I’m not alone on this journey. Harts of Teal has blessingly impacted my attitude and given me support in so many ways. I’m thankful to know Kim, Sandra, and Marsha and so appreciate their work with making sure we know we are not alone!
